Mariette Baker McDermid, who teaches English 10A in Star City, just completed a project with her students utilizing the Web 2.0 tool Voicethread.
Mariette found it difficult to find authentic speaking exercises for students in the upper grades. While teaching Daniel’s Story, she had the students create answers to various aspects of the novel and then create a Voicethread slide for each aspect. This gave a polished product and a good way for them to be able to practice speaking in a formal setting.
The use of Voicethread in NESD continues to grow. So what exactly is Voicethread? A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that can hold images, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate pages and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Users can share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.
Mariette used the following outline assignment: PDF

In December 2007 and January 2008, Mrs. Newton's Grade 9 classes began an ambitious project in which they examined the topic of bullying at their school in particular and their community at large.
The classes first researched the topic in their ELA classes. Then they were instructed in the use of GCast, a free site which allows users to record and post interviews to the web using an ordinary cel phone. They also received instruction on how to download and edit these recordings using Audacity, a freeware sound editor. They then divided into groups and interviewed counsellors, school administrators, bullies themselves, victims of bullying, and even parents of victims,
The results are quite impressive as the two attached recordings show. By examining the various points of view, they present an extremely compelling portrait of one of a school's most difficult social problems. They have also demonstrated what happens when socially aware classes capitalize on the web tools now available.
The NESD Technology Committee met for the first time in Tisdale to discuss various issues relating to software, hardware and integration of technology. The committee is comprised of the following members: Kathy Moss, Rodney White, Byan Young, Mark Raine, Debbie Tessmer, Karen Holowka, Rob McKay, Trevor Wasilow, Robert Nystuen, Adam Neish, Gary Maunder and Thad Swidzinski
Shirley DeMarsh and Alice Hoffart, Tisdale Elementary School's Grade One Teachers, introduced their students to the "Keyboarding for Kids" program. Originally developed by Norma Gregoire, a Grade One Teacher in Davidson SK, the program involves students wearing different coloured rings on each finger to assist them in learning proper keyboarding technique. Students enjoyed the activity, and are looking forward to continuing with the Program in Grade Two. Pictured here is Alice's class.
